Jayenkai of SoCoder has applied the Geometry Wars/Echoes retro deconstructionist mash-up mentality to the Bubble Bobble/Mario Bros. style hop-’n-bop single-screen platformer. Enter NeonPlat 2.
Color the white floors to make them tumble. Grab balls and toss them at enemies, then grab the power-ups that float away. It’s all familiar grammar, mixing a bit of City Connection and Snow Bros. Yet the game has such character and verve and immediacy; it takes those mechanics and digests them to make a frothy, fun party game with a sort of a Nintendo DS flavor.
Four players can join together on a single keyboard. There are four difficulties and eight distinct game modes which often significantly change the rules. The game is constantly whizzing with “friendly” information, to make sure you’re never for want of options. This tends to result in some visual clutter. Judging by Jayenkai’s websites, this seems to be less an accident and more a case of the preferred aesthetic.
As far as immediacy goes, the game runs like a rocket; there’s barely any load time, and it barely seems to affect the processor or virtual memory. So you can boot it up, play a few rounds, and leave without worrying about it making your system unstable. That’s always nice.
