An aborted, yet noble, attempt at an RPG within the Xferplay engine, The Mist consists entirely of a castle courtyard and several doors. Some of these doors lead to interior rooms; most do not. The character walks convincingly. The backgrounds look nice. It all hangs together, for what it is. Yet that's all that there is.

As for why the game was abandoned, we can probably look to every other RPG developed in Game-Maker. For one, there is no support for text boxes. Although not a fatal flaw, outside of some real ingenuity it's probably a crippling one. For another, there's the whole counter/pervasive map issue. There is no way to ensure that things changed on one map will remain changed once the map is reloaded. Likewise, there is no way to reset any character counters that have increased. So things that should stay don't stay, and things that shouldn't stay do stay. Yippee.

As with the text boxes, there are ways around everything -- and other artists have come up with convoluted level webs to ensure that things flow exactly as intended. It's just a headache, though, and for a game with as many event flags as an RPG it's probably not worth it.

Story[edit]

Roaming the castle in The Mist

In the kingdom of Ethi, rumors arise that an evil wizard is planning to attack. The king, not concerned by the news, ignores the danger.

Then one night, the wizard and his evil army attacked. Many of the king's bravest soldiers died. The next day, Princess Britney, the king's only daughter, was no where to be found! She was to be wed to Prince Edgar the next day.

You have been chosen by the king to rescue Princess Britney from the wizard's clutches, and bring her back so she can marry Prince Edgar and rule the kingdom.
