With The Legend of Budd, Caudel covers similar ground to FireAxe; it's his attempt at a Zelda homage within the Game-Maker framework. Whereas FireAxe builds from the cosmetic and tonal elements of A Link to the Past, Budd is an overt tribute to -- possibly even satire of -- the original The Legend of Zelda. Whereas FireAxe is an earnest effort to make something new from found material, Budd is a half-built bucket of clear pop cultural references. The point of each reference is that you recognize it for what it is, and so the game itself faithfully articulates its source material.

The Legend of Budd isn't as much of a game as FireAxe; we control our walking drop of corrective fluid from Power Budd! in four directions, and we can toss our sword in the last direction we moved. There's not much in the way of animation. There's not much in the way of opposition. The map consists of just a few screens -- faithful though they may be to Zelda's design. Lounging around in this tiny world are several Budd-like figures, dressed in Star Wars or Mortal Kombat regalia. They don't really do anything; they're just there to be seen, and to provide Budd things to stab.

At a glance, this game seems like a design test -- one quickly abandoned due to Game-Maker's lack of screen-by-screen scrolling and the difficulty in getting the sword to behave as in the original Zelda. The other figures, though, throw this theory for a loop. Too much effort went into their illustration for them to be just placeholders. So, we seem to have the start of a joke game that never made it past the setup.

For what is here, The Legend of Budd plays well enough. Build a full map with these elements and populate it with monsters, and it will be a fun place to explore. For that matter, it's nice to follow up a platformer like Power Budd! with a totally different genre. It's interesting to see Caudel's bold next step for the character, even if its nature is a bit inscrutable.
