Sherwood Forest

The Pennsylvanian pairing of Rob Sherwood and Dan Whalen latched onto Game-Maker early, pumped out game after game without ever really learning the tools or apparently play testing the results of their efforts, and then quickly vanished. Their concern lay more in high concept scenarios than in exploring Game-Maker’s abilities. The result is that each game stays well within the limits of Game-Maker’s back-of-the-box feature set.

What is curious about Sherwood’s games is that often the concepts are, if not brilliant, unusual and full of potential. As they went on, some of their sprite and background design was even rather charismatic. Yet the actual game design is bewilderingly slapdash, to the point where there’s a certain fascination, perhaps even an education, to poring over their catalog.

Sherwood and Whalen also produced some games under a different system, that lent itself to PC-style adventure games. Games produced under this system include, or may include, The Old Rimshaw Place, Ghost Manor, Mystery Manor, High Seas Homicide, and an adult title called The Adventures of Melvin Freebush. The latter is perhaps Sherwood Forest's best-known game. On reflection, Sherwood could easily have included porn in any of its genres. Had they that foresight, one wonders where they would be today.
