Skyroads

Release type: Incomplete
Release date: 2000
Levels: 2
Author: John and Robert Brandon

Skyroads was an attempt to make a game inspired by the notable dos game "Skyroads" by Blue Moon Software. While the original game featured a 3D behind-the-vehicle style of gameplay, the attempt and challenge here was to make something within the confines of Game Maker. This resulted in a 2D side view of a ship inspired by the ship in Skyroads. The game as re-imagined in Game Maker stayed true to the concept of the original game - that is, piloting a ship that jumps across an obstacle course of blocks suspended in the void of space to reach an exit at the end of the course.

As with many games and demos by Brandon Enterprises Skyroads is an incomplete test with one ship and two proof of concept test levels.

Background

John Brandon:

One of the coolest things I discovered was a Skyroads demake we started working on. I entirely forgot about this... but we had the start of something with potential that could have actually worked within the limits of GM. Essentially, the game involves jumping from platform to platform with some forced movement making you go from left to right, and you jump on tricky platforms to get to an exit at the end. If we'd thought about it at the time, we could have had a line of blocks to kill the player directly underneath the obstacle course platform, and perhaps underneath that, some blocks suggesting the surface of a sun/planet/asteroid field, etc to flesh out the Skyroads concept and make the levels less empty looking.

Archive history

During Fall and Winter 2023, John Brandon acquired several old hard drives from PCs used by his family in the 1990s. Most of the hard drives were unreadable through standard means with corrupted and unreadable data. Using various data recovery techniques John was able to rip many Game Maker files from the old drives, some of them incomplete or partially corrupted, and was able to assemble some of these files into packages readable by Game Maker. Skyroads is one of the games recovered through this method.
