Yuphex II
A registration bonus for Yuphex, containing "SIX planets, a secret level containing the meaning of life, a reverse gravity zone, more levels, and plenty of fun".
It seems to actually exist -- even now! Matt Bell still has the original files, somewhere.
This is amongst several games made available in corrupted and unplayable form, in a damaged archive provided by Matt Bell on May 6, 2011. Attempts to repair the files have as yet proved unproductive...
Story
Five years later.
The Yuphlaxian System has been renovated. Slimex has been sold to the Aplon System, a boring galaxy of casino worlds in desperate need of variety. In return, one Aplonian planet named Plasmex has been brought here.
Plasmex features a unique reverse gravity system that adds to an atmosphere of craziness. The Yuphlaxian government hopes that Plasmex will increase the SYSTEM's entertainment value.
Zip has been properly disposed of by being sent into the sun.
Yuphex is still here, however. In fact, some members of the government liked Yuphex so much that they used excess tax revenue to buy a moon for Yuphex. They uncreatively named it Monex.
CGA and Mono were terraformed way back in 3167, over 250 years ago. Back then, terraformers had primitive graphics drivers that could only terraform in spinach green monochrome (with a visibly low refresh rate). Some of the advanced teraformers of that age could even do (gasp) FOUR colors.
Anyway, the planets languished in an antique planet dealership until the Yuphlaxian System bought them in order to provide more low cost housing.
Pirex was terraformed less than six weeks ago and is still full of molten lava. When it cools, it will become an Earth-like planet and an important government center.
Unfortunately, the terraformer has malfunctioned. Instead of cooling, Pirex is still heating up. If a coolant generator is not hooked up to the terraformer within 36 hours, the planet will overheat and explode, destroying the entire system.
The citizens of the Yuphlaxian System call for YOU in this time of need. You must go and save the system once again.
There are six parts to the coolant generator. They were accidentally misplaced in various parts of the system. You must find them and bring them to Pirex. Have Fun.
Instructions
Yuphex instructions:
- F1: display these instructions
- F2: status
- F5: Save game
- F6: load game
Save game allows people who want to make the game easier to save their game every two seconds and load right away if they die. It is entirely possible to beat the game without saving.
You start with 10 lives. Whenever you lose a life, you have to restart the level. You also start with 255 hit points. Whenever you're hit by an enemy, you lose some of those hit points. If you lose all of them, you die. Food helps replenish lost hit points.
Moving around the Yuphlaxian System:
Use the up, down, left, and right keys to move your spaceship. In gravity-free space, all your movements build up momentum. That's why you don't stop moving when you stop pressing an arrow key. To enter a planet, just touch it.
In the close-up planet views, the arrow keys move your spaceship, but without momentum. To land, go up to the area on the planet that looks "uncommon", like the dark hole on Yuphex.
When you're walking on the planets (except for Zip), these are the keys to use:
- left: walk left
- right: walk right
- up: jump straight up
- Up-right (Pg Up): jump up and to the right
- Up-left (Home): jump up and to the left
- ' ' Space Bar: spit green goo
You will spit in the direction that you most recently moved.
If you find a coolant generator piece, press P to pick it up.
On Plasmex, all controls are vertically reversed. (so is gravity)
note: the extraordinary jumping power of the character can overload the graphics engine, causing the game to freeze and the character to move to a different place on the screen and begin to float. At this time, the only way to stop this bug is to save your game frequently.
Another note: the character will jump the highest when the arrow key is held down. For a smaller jump, tap the arrow key. Also, at some points in the game, it is necessary to change direction in mid-air by holding down the up key and then holding down the up-right or up-left key(or vice versa). Practice it a few times to get the hang of it.
Yet Another Note: In case you missed it, your only weapon is your spit (Space bar).
IMPORTANT!!!!! DO NOT ENTER THE TERRAFORMER ON PIREX UNTIL YOU HAVE ALL SIX COOLANT GENERATOR PIECES. IF YOU FAIL TO DO SO, YOU WILL LOSE EVERY PIECE YOU HAVE COLLECTED SO FAR.
